OUR STORY
We were grounded by several fundamental beliefs when we formed and launched 1000 Feathers in 2016.
We believed there was more that could be done to reduce growing gaps and disconnects across all levels of the social service sector. We believed that organizations needed to be able to communicate a bold vision and execute more strategically. We believed it was time to transform systems that, for too long, have prevented people in communities from having equitable access to the programs and resources they need. And we believed that we could assemble a team uniquely positioned to do all of these things in a sophisticated and interconnected way.
Of course, none of this work happens in a vacuum. It happens in communities with real people who have real needs.
Along our journey, we have been reminded that communities and the needs of the people who live in them are wildly complex. We have also been reminded that organizations are doing their best to exist in an ever-changing landscape and as part of larger, complex systems that are frequently misaligned and disconnected. We have been reminded that far too often, the change agents - leaders, partners, networks, organizations, and consultants like us - charged with serving communities have not responded with equally dynamic and transformative approaches to actually solve problems and change conditions.
As we learned more about these realities and better and further reflected on our work, we noticed an undeniable trend in the successes of our clients and our own impact. Our best and most meaningful client relationships have focused on transforming organizations, networks, and systems within communities to make them stronger. That is our optimal condition and what most often gets those we work with to results. With this in mind, our team is doubling down on our responsibility to ensure that all communities and the people who live in them are strong, resilient, and able to reach their full potential.
This requires us to boldly and exclusively focus on the transformation of organizations, communities, and systems —producing real and lasting impact. It requires us to move beyond the creation of products and remain steadfast in our commitment to change. It requires us to commit to revolutionizing how clients, organizations, and communities view their work with consultants through a newly revised vision and mission statement as well as our organizational promises. And it requires us to continually add expertise and experience to our team to ensure that we meet the evolving needs of our clients and partners.
OUR NAME
The 1000 Islands region of Upstate New York is truly one of the most beautiful places in the world, especially between July and October. The 744 miles of waterway that makes up the mighty St. Lawrence River connect the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. Just a few miles from Lake Ontario, you will find this breathtaking place that is home to 1,864 islands, to be exact. This is the place where Forrest grew up. It is where Forrest and Heather (and Elvis) now spend most of their summer days. One of the 1000 Islands, appropriately named Heart Island, was even the location of their wedding in 2012.
But what about Feathers? Well, that is the easy part. Take equal parts, Forrest and Heather, put it together with the 1000 Islands and you end up with 1000 Feathers… and now you know the story of our name.
But this consulting firm is not just about Forrest and Heather.
The unique team of colleagues assembled to form 1000 Feathers brings decades of combined work with foundations, nonprofits, communities, and government agencies. It is an expert team that is focused on transformation and change. And our collective story is still being written…
